Sweden Shale Overview

Alum Shale Formation or Alunskiffer of Sweden. These black shales are of Cambro-Ordovician age and occur in Östergötland and elsewhere. Gas has been reported to seep from wells that penetrated the Alum shale. The gas has formed from the bacteria feeding from the organic content of the shale and converting part of the organic material in the shale into methane. This works in the same way as a biogas digester. The gas remains trapped within the natural cracks and fissures of the Alunskiffer.

Though the shale is somewhat thin and outside of the gas window in most of the area, its high organic content and moderate depth make it a very promising target where prospective.
